When Mr. Jack’s mother came to call on Ethel, she said, “now I want to see the children, for I Ve heard so much about them.” So Ethel called Lazileva and Mudfort and Rodirtygus down from the nursery. Lazileva was spick and span and clean, for she washed her face and hands before she came down. She made a lovely little curtsey, and Mrs. Jack said, “what a deliciously dainty child; she looks as if she had just come home from the milliner’s in a bandbox!” Mudfort was spick and span and clean (all except his boots), for he had washed his face and hands before he came down. He made a low bow, and Mrs. Jack said, “what a delightfully decent child; he looks as if he were made in a toy shop, and had just been varnished!”(She didn’t notice his boots.)But Rodirtygus had been playing with some clay, and he was all over mud, hands and face and clothes and everything. He had forgotten to wash himself before he came down. He took off his hat and smiled pleasantly, and Mrs. Jack said, “what a dismally dirty child; he looks as if he had been thrown into the ash barrel and had been taken out by mistake. Tell me, Are you a Goop?”
